This course is definitely a BEAST! It is such a exceptional balance of whitewater paddling, trail Running, and mountain biking through steep terrain. I started the route on the upper section of the Ocoee river which builds from mellow and scenic to some superfun class 4 water. The large spillway you have to portage around marks the beginning of the middle section of the Ocoee. This classic piece of whitewater is mostly continuous all the way down to lake. Once I got down to Parksville Lake I paddled a few miles of flatwater to the back of Sylco Inlet. From this point I stashed the boat and hit the trail up Hogsback Mtn. This trail is so good! It is steep and wild…. The time I’ve spent back there, I’ve encountered black bear, wild turkeys, hogs, and rattlesnakes. This day was no exception. 4 miles of good singletrack climbs you up onto the Forest Service Rd 374. Heading south, continue running another 4 miles to reach FSR 221. This is an awesome 8 miles of running, but demanding. This intersection marks the beginning of the bike segment. This section starts off with some fun downhill gravel all the way to Big Creek. After enjoying a dip in the creek and some refueling prepare to start climbing your ass off! This is the steepest section of the course with 8 miles of gravel. Grinding through this rewards you with the amazing singletrack of the Tanasi trail system. Just shy of 12 miles you’ll roll through Quartz loop, Riverview, Chestnut Mtn., and Thunder Rock Express. The course finishes up at Thunder Rock campground. This is a day full of solid adventure and challenging endurance. Its a SuperBeast…..
